CDL Driver – Department of Public Works

About the role

The Department of Public Works is seeking a reliable CDL Driver to support solid waste, streets, parks, and maintenance operations. The role involves safe operation of city‑owned trucks and equipment to ensure essential services run smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Operate garbage trucks, dump trucks, and other city vehicles on assigned routes.
• Lift, load, and transport trash cans, recyclables, bulk items, and construction debris.
• Drive to disposal facilities, weigh loads, dump waste, and complete required documentation.
• Support seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal, leaf collection, and park maintenance.
• Operate hand and power tools (mowers, chainsaws, jackhammers) and perform basic equipment maintenance.
• Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and basic preventative maintenance.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Experience operating commercial vehicles or performing public‑works labor preferred.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions.
• Strong adherence to safety procedures and ability to work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Required skills

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class B minimum; Class A preferred.
• Operation of garbage trucks and dump trucks.
• Use of hand and power tools such as mowers, chainsaws, and jackhammers.
• Vehicle inspection and basic preventative maintenance.
