Technician I – Public Works

About the role

The Department of Public Works is seeking a reliable Technician I to support operations across solid waste, streets, parks, and building maintenance. This full‑time, entry‑level position involves hands‑on work in a variety of outdoor environments, ensuring city property remains clean, safe, and well‑maintained.

Key responsibilities

• Collect and load trash, compost/yard waste, and bulk items for disposal.
• Maintain city streets, sidewalks, parks, and facilities through cleaning, mowing, landscaping, and tree care.
• Remove snow and ice using hand tools and equipment during inclement weather.
• Assist with street and sidewalk repairs, including pothole patching and debris removal.
• Install and maintain city signage and related infrastructure.
• Operate hand tools and power equipment such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and jackhammers.
• Support seasonal operations like leaf collection and storm response.
• Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on tools and equipment.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (preferred).
• Experience performing manual labor or public‑works tasks (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; CDL preferred.
• Ability to work safely in traffic, noisy, and variable weather conditions.
• Capability to work independently and as part of a team.

Required skills

• Operation of hand tools.
• Operation of power equipment (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, jackhammers).
• Vehicle operation and safe driving.
