Engineering and Maintenance Manager

About the role

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager leads all engineering and maintenance activities for a multi‑asset downstream fuel business, covering retail, distribution, ground fuels, LPG, aviation and B2B operations. The role ensures assets are safe, reliable, compliant and cost‑effective while supporting business continuity, growth and capital projects across diverse African operating environments.

Key responsibilities

• Lead engineering and maintenance functions across all downstream fuel assets and implement corporate engineering policies and maintenance strategies.
• Establish and manage preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance programmes and asset‑integrity frameworks, including inspections, testing and certifications.
• Drive improvements in asset availability, reliability and lifecycle cost management; resolve major equipment failures and integrity risks.
• Support and govern capital projects, refurbishments and upgrades; review and approve maintenance‑related designs and ensure smooth handover from construction to operations.
• Ensure compliance with HSE, process‑safety, petroleum, LPG and aviation regulations; lead risk assessments, audits and incident investigations.
• Develop and manage OPEX maintenance budgets and engineering‑related CAPEX budgets; monitor cost performance and implement optimisation initiatives.
• Manage contractors, service providers and OEMs, ensuring competency, safety compliance and performance; approve work completion and certify invoices.
• Lead, develop and coach engineering and maintenance teams, establishing training, competency frameworks and succession plans.
• Define KPIs for maintenance, reliability, safety and cost performance; report results to senior management and drive continuous‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Significant experience leading engineering and maintenance functions in downstream fuel, petroleum or similar industrial environments.
• Strong knowledge of asset integrity, reliability engineering and maintenance best practices.
• Proven ability to manage large, multi‑disciplinary teams and external contractors.
• Demonstrated experience with HSE and process‑safety compliance in regulated sectors.
• Solid financial acumen for budgeting, cost control and capital‑project governance.
